3/26 - 3/30

Weekly objectives:
Students will learn to identify, and perform major and minor second and sixth intervals as assessed by questions and answers and classroom singing.

Students will reinforce their knowledge of the Major and minor thirds as well as the perfect fourth intervals as assessed by classroom singing and identification of intervals played on the piano.

Students will continue to learn "Bridge Over Troubled Water" as assessed by classroom singing, and discussion of song.

Prepare for a performance at the student talent show by rehearsing "Season's of Love", and prepare for a performance at organizational contest by singing"All That Jazz" and "Sim Shalom"

Organizational contest 4/14 (Sat), trying to get scheduling conflicts resolved.
Tuesday will be a boys sectional, Wed will be a girls sectional- bring homework

Intervals:
Learn the difference between a major and minor second through classroom discussion, question and answer, visual identification, and classroom singing of both half and whole steps (minor and major seconds).

Discuss how a scale is made of a patter of major and minor seconds (whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half- for major)

Intervals:
Review all intervals learned up to this point with aural quiz- play an interval on the piano and have students write down the correct interval played (collected for 13 participation points).

Warm-Ups:
Sing major triad (Do, Mi, Sol) going downwards, and minor triad (Do, Me, Sol) going upward
- discuss that a triad is made up of thirds, either major or minor

Singing:
"Bridge " mm 37 - 51, put boys and girls parts together.
Review parts up to this point.

Sing "Seasons of Love", "Sim Shalom", and "All that Jazz" as preparation for the talent show and organizational contest.

3/19 - 3/23

Weekly Objective:
To celebrate their accomplishment in Friday's concert with a cookie and karaoke party because they deserve it.


To begin learning "Bridge Over Trouble Water" with correct notes, rhythms, and words through measure 34- as assessed by performance of the song in class, in order to perform it in the next concert.


To understand how the intervals M3, m3, and P4 function within music, and how to ID and perform each- as assessed by performance of each in class, and visual identification on a worksheet, so that they can apply this knowledge to the songs we sing, and build tonal skills for future singing.

We are performing "Seasons of Love" in the talent show next week. Yay!
There will be a substitute on Thursday, you will complete a worksheet about intervals.

Intervals:
Learn to ID the difference between a M3 and a m3 (Do Mi/Do Me, Mi Sol/Sol Mi, Do La/La Do, Fa La/La Fa) using solfege and a handout with common song associations for each interval. (question/answer and discussion)

Warm-Ups:
Use the M3 on "Do, Mi" to warm up the low part of the voice
Use m3 on "Do, Me" to warm up the high part of the voice

Singing:
New song "Bridge Over Troubled Water" for Awards Concert
learn mm 1-10 (or 19, if time)
- work ea. part individually and then put them together in two part, then three part harmonies.

Intervals:
Learn the Sound of a P4 (Do Fa, Sol Do) using solfege and a handout of common song assoc. for ea. interval. (question/answer and discussion)

A worksheet will be handed out to be done Thursday with the substitute.

Thurs:
Substitute- Students will complete the interval worksheet individually. If everyone finishes, they may continue to watch "The Music Man" where they left off last time.

Mon:
Announce/Remind:
Tomorrow, we will have a worksheet on counting rhythms.

We will also split the time in two tomorrow. The girls will run everything for the first 15 minutes while the boys complete the worksheet. Then, the boys will work with me for the rest of the period while the girls work on the worksheets. If the in-class assignment is not finished that day, it must be turned in first thing Wednesday before class.


Rhythm exercise:
Have rhythms on board (in 4/4 and 2/4):
4/4- quarter note, quarter rest, two eighth notes, two eighth notes/ half note, quarter note, quarter rest//
2/4- half note/ half rest/quarter note, two eighth notes/ four eighth notes//
Ask students to explain the time signature, and each line of rhythm in detail (using the rhythm tree handout)
Then have students clap these rhythms.

Warm-Ups:
"Zu"- Do Mi Re Fa Mi Sol Mi Re Do - moving downward by half-steps
"Za"- Sol Fa Mi Re Do Mi Sol Mi Do - moving upward by half-steps

Singing:
"Sim Shalom" intense tuning -we will sing the song completely rubato and stop on each chord of harmony to scrutinize the tuning until each progression is optimal, then run song without music (for memorization).
If time allows, run "All That Jazz" (without music)


Tues:

Today, we will have a worksheet on counting rhythms.
The girls will run everything for the first 15 minutes while the boys complete the worksheet. Then, the boys will work with me for the rest of the period while the girls work on the worksheets. If the in-class assignment is not finished that day, it must be turned in first thing Monday before class.

Warm-Ups:
"Zu" sliding from Sol to Do- moving downward by half-steps
"Za" sliding from Do to Sol and back to Do

Singing/worksheet:
Girls- run all pieces without music (15 minutes)
Boys, work on matching pitch, and singing harmony on "Sim Shalom" ("Seasons of Love" too, if time)

Concert is in 1 week! Anticipated absence forms for rehearsal on the 15th.
I will work with soloists on "Sim Shalom" and "Season's of Love" the last 10 minutes of class.

Warm-Ups:
Explosive consonants, v. legato consonants - review proper breathing discussed last week.
These exercises will move downward by half-step, and then upward by half-step to warm-up the students' entire ranges.

Singing:
"Edelweiss"- intense tuning
After that, we will run-through the entire song as written without music (for memorization).

Last 10 minutes of class will be coachings for soloists.

Students will be split into three even groups, sing each part once, and then put them together and work on maintain correct tuning.

"Za"- Do Sol Fa Mi Re Do, moving upward by half steps

Singing:
"Seasons of Love" intense tuning, then run through it without music (for memorization).
If time permits, run through "Edelweiss" (without music)
